Northern Highlands played its season opener on Sept. 3 against Sparta of Sussex County. Teaneck played its opening game at Ridgefield Park. Northern Highlands and Teaneck play in the Big North's Colonial Division.
Northern Highlands finished 3-7 last year under Chris LoCurto. That was the first losing season for the team since 2010. Among the setbacks was a 34-26 loss to Teaneck.
The Highlanders lost most of their starting skill position players from last year. Senior quarterback Noah Abdalla, who saw action in four games last year, figures to be the team's signal-caller this year. LoCurto has to completely retool the running game, where Jelani-Ray Garvin and Matt Rosato rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and seven TDs last year. Both of those players have graduated.
Teaneck's win over Northern Highlands was its only victory en route to a 1-9 season. Under first-year coach Harold Clark, Teaneck is seeking its first winning season since 2006.
Clark will be helped by the return of running back Rashaad Rice, who led the team in rushing last year with 317 yards and five touchdowns, according to statistics on MaxPreps.
