YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 59-year-old Ridgefield man was struck and killed on Route 17 in Ramsey last night outside the Maple Shade Motel, where he’d been a guest, police said this morning
The victim was hit by two vehicles on the highway’s southbound side at 9:25 p.m., Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney said this morning.
The first was a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by an Emerson resident who told police he “hit something that he thought may have been a deer,” the chief said.
The second was a 2004 Toyota driven by an Oradell resident, he said.
Both drivers immediately stopped and remained at the scene, Gurney said. No summonses were immediately issued, he added.
“It has not been determined as to why the victim was attempting to cross Route 17,” the chief said.
There’s a Hess station/mini mart, with a Bottle King right next door, on the other side of the highway.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Unit, the county Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and the county Medical Examiner responded, along with Ramsey and Upper Saddle River police, the Bergen County Police Department, New Jersey State Police, the Ramsey Rescue Squad and the state Department of Transportation.
The southbound highway was shut down at Lake Street in Ramsey.
