BEYOND BERGEN: A Port Authority police officer snatched a 21-year-old Edison from a catwalk on the Outerbridge Crosing this morning, preventing him from killing himself.

Officer Paul D’Orio was returning from the New Jersey side of the bridge when he saw the man walking westward on the catwalk just after 8 a.m., the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said this morning.

D’Orio got out of his cruiser and approached the man, who said he intended to jump over the railing to his death, Pentangelo said.

The 17-year-old veteran then grabbed the 165-pound man by his shoulders and pulled him to safety, he said.

EMS workesr took the man to a local hospital.
