Honors set for anti-bullying students at unique Bergen conference

VIDEO: A straightforward video by students at Wood-Ridge High School heads the list of winners of  Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli’s “Don’t Stand By for Bullying” contest. Eleventh and 12th graders Melissa Spethmann, Eric Puga, Valerie Cafarella, and Joe Tartaglione will be among those lauded Wednesday at a unique conference of nearly 350 educators, law enforcement officers and social service professionals.

Wood-Ridge High School students in award-winning “How to Stop Bullying 101″

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., April 27

WHERE: The Venetian, Garfield

Completely paid for through forfeiture funds, “Educator’s Update: Latest Issues & Laws Affecting Students & Schools” will touch on several key topics:

• Current youth trends involving narcotics and alcohol;

• The toughest anti-bullying law in the U.S., whose chief architect is state Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle of Bergen County (CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO);

• Other legislation concerning education from Congressman Steven Rothman;

• Updates about student safety and technology.

Special presentations will also be made to the winning entries in the anti-bullying essay contest (see below).

These include “How to Stop Bullying 101”:

“Students from throughout the county submitted more than 1,200 entries of posters, Powerpoint presentations, and videos depicting their ideas about how to combat bullying,” said Molinelli.

Both the Midland School in Paramus and the Hoover School in Bergenfield produced two winners each. The Anti-Bullying Club at Westwood JR/SR High School had another.
