Authorities charge Florida woman with forging $34,000 in checks in Allendale, Wyckoff, elsewhere

ONLY ON CVP: An investigation launched after Allendale police arrested a Florida woman for cashing a forged check late last summer found that she’d done the same in three other towns — stealing $34,000 overall from two companies in just two days, authorities said.

Maily D. Pedraza, 22, a Cuban national from Hialeah, has remained free since posting $2,000 bail hours after Allendale police took her into custody last Aug. 22 on charges of forging and cashing a $6,321.45 check from a Florida construction company using the name Maily Garcia.

Soon after, Wyckoff police charged Pedraza with passing another forged check, for $7,241.15, from the same company a day earlier.

An 11-count indictment returned by a grand jury in Hackensack details two similar crimes in Montville and one in West Caldwell — all involving an interior design company also in Florida.

The checks — for $6,842.54, $6,641.75, $6,925.31 — were all cashed by “Maily Garcia” on Aug. 21, the indictment says.

It also charges her with carrying $4,100 in cash that “a reasonable person would believe to be derived from criminal activity.”
