According to the Nixle alert, five coyotes were circled the person and the dog on Oak Road Thursday, attempting to take the small leashed dog.
A passing driver began honking to scare the coyotes and got out of the car to help disrupt the confrontation, police said.
The situation ended there, and everyone made it home safely and unharmed, according to the SRPD.
TYCO Animal Control and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife are aware of the situation and are working with police to resolve it, authorities said.
"No pets or small children should be left outside unattended," SRPD said.
"As per Fish and Wildlife, walkers, dog walkers and joggers should consider carrying a compressed air horn and or a walking stick in the event they experience a similar incident."
Any confrontations with wildlife should be reported to the police desk (201)- 327-5300
