SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- Jay Feinberg -- founder and CEO of Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation -- will be the commencement speaker at Saddle River Day School's Thursday, May 19, graduation ceremony.
Feinberg graduated SRDS in 1986. In 1991, he was diagnosed with leukemia, and he embarked on a monumental search for a bone marrow donor. After nearly 60,000 donors were tested -- with other patients finding matches through the process, in the meantime -- Feinberg finally found a match.
Twenty years later, Feinberg's legacy includes the Gift of Life Foundation, which he founded in 1991. He is currently its CEO. It is one of two registries listing unrelated bone marrow donors in the United States.
The foundation has facilitated nearly 3,000 transplants. You can read survivor stories here. The organization has also helped revolutionize the donor signup process: donor drives now use a quick cheek swab -- no needles needed.
