MIDLAND PARK, N.J.—Midland Park Junior and Senior High School students crafted dozens of no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus, a 20-year-old charitable organization that shares comfort items with those in need.

“It’s interesting to see how they pair themselves up,” said seventh grade teacher Teresa Mallon, who has been running the event for the past four years at the school.

After Mallon heard about the project through a woman at her church, Mallon began researching no-sew instructions after she heard about Project Linus through a woman at her church.

Since Project Linus requires all blankets to be hand-made, Mallon said she needed to find a no-sew blanket that would be a easy enough for 12-year-old students to work on.

"We have a lot of older students who work with the younger ones,” she said. "They put a lot of thought into choosing what fleece they like. There is something for everyone."

Board of Education President Maryalice Thomas has been one of the event’s biggest supporters, and she buys yards of fleece for the event each year. Other school staff, students and community supporters donate material as well.

Seventy-eight students spent two hours after a shortened school day working on 77 blanket projects at cafeteria tables.

The fleece blankets were then collected and will be distributed by Project Linus representatives to youngsters and seniors throughout Bergen County.

“A lot of thought and effort go into the blankets," Mallon said.

"(Students) really want to do a good job. They understand someone is going to receive these - someone who needs to feel the love and encouragement."
