Arthur Lomando, 44, was in surgery at Harlem Hospital, in police custody, with severe head and leg injuries after jumping onto the tracks at Amsterdam and St. Nicholas avenues, he said.
Lomando was the subject of a previous search after 48-year-old special education teacher Suzanne Bardzell called police earlier this month.
Her car engine was still running, Molinelli told Daily Voice, when Bardzell's body was found this afternoon outside 715 Godwin Avenue -- which became the focal point of a search earlier this month in a separate incident involving Lomando.
Bardzell, who taught in the Teaneck school district, had been stabbed several times, including in the neck, he said.
"There were a lot of problems with him," a source close to Bardzell told Daily Voice. "It must've happened just as she pulled in."
Lomando -- who was let go from the NYPD for psychological reasons more than a decade ago -- was waiting when Bardzell pulled up in her black Volkswgen before 3:30 p.m., Molinelli said.
After breaking her car window, Lomando stabbed Bardzell with a machete-type knife, the prosecutor told reporters during a nighttime news conference in the neighborhood.
Then he took off, Molinelli said.
Prosecutor's detectives and Bergen County Sheriff's crime scene investigations quickly converged on the scene.
Tracking dogs were brought in, as well.
Warrants charging Lomando with murder, weapons possession and violating a restraining order were obtained, Molinelli said.
Bardzell, who was divorced, lived with her two sons -- Alex, 18, and Adam, 16.
"They lost their mother," Molinelli said, responding to a reporter's question about how they were doing. "Certainly they have to be devastated."
Lomando, of Suffolk County, was discharged from the NYPD in July 2004 after being diagnosed with depressive anxiety, court papers show.
The couple met online three years ago, but things went sour and Bardzell obtained a restraining order, Molinelli said.
Police officers from 18 or so agencies flooded the same neighborhood searching for Lomando on Oct. 10 after he violated the court order. He was believed suicidal and possibly armed at the time.
