TRIBUTE: An accomplished 19-year-old former Northern Highlands Regional High School track star from Allendale died yesterday in Center City, Philadelphia.

Madison Holleran, who already was excelling at Penn University in the middle of her first year, achieved several distinctions at Northern Highlands. She was a 2013 Indoor All American in the distance medley and a 2013 New Jersey State Outdoor Meet of Champions winner in the 800 meters, among other achievements.

She also captained the school’s girls soccer and track teams.

Holleran’s personal records: 2:08.87 in the 800 meters and 21:43 in the 6,000 meters

A funeral Mass is scheduled for noon Tuesday at Guardian Angel Church, 320 Franklin Turnpike, Allendale. The Holleran family asks that donations be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

School officials postponed two Penn events — sorority recruitment and a track and field meet — on Saturday after learning of Holleran’s death.

Holleran was participating in the recruitment effort, said Caitlan Carberry, the program’s vice president.

Member of Penn’s varsity men’s and women’s track and field teams who were scheduled to compete in meets today were given the option not to.

“She was bright and well-liked with an incredible future ahead of her,” Penn President Amy Gutmann said in a statement. “There are simply no words that can properly convey the sense of heartache that we all feel at such a tragic loss.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this very difficult time,” she added.

Holleran was majoring in philosophy, politics and economics, according to the Penn Athletics website. She only recently was thrilled to discover that she was becoming an aunt.

Out of respect to the family, CLIFFVIEW PILOT is withholding cause of death.
