Niquaan C. Gaymon, 26, was carrying a dozen cards from various banks all re-coded with stolen card numbers, Police Chief James Batelli said.

"It's an interesting scam," the chief told Daily Voice. "He purchases the credit cards for about $30 each from Russia using bitcoins. The cards come imprinted with his name on the front but the information encrypted on the magnetic strip on the back of the card is from someone else who has had their identity stolen.

"If the store questions authenticity of the card the individual can show legitimate identification that matches the name on the front of the card."

After township detectives were tipped off by their colleagues in Upper Saddle River, Officer William Hunt saw Gaymon pull into a Valero station on the highway Wednesday afternoon, Batelli said.

Backups quickly arrived to join Hunt in grabbing Gaymon as he walked out of a BP station, where the chief said he tried to buy cigarettes with two stolen credit cards.

In addition to the credit cards, they found several cartons of cigarettes, three boxes of 9mm hollow point ammunition and NYPD uniforms in the vehicle, which was registered to someone else out of Brooklyn, he said.

Working with investigators from Upper Saddle River, township Detective Lt. Guido Bussinelli and Detectives Michael Grassi and Eric Larsen learned that Gammon and another person were caught on surveillance cameras in a Georgia-registered 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe that they used while committing credit card fraud, the chief said.

A judge ordered Gammon held on $25,000 bail, charged with possessing 12 forged credit card and altering the magnetic strips; theft; receiving stolen property and possession of hollow-nose bullets.

An investigation was continuing, the chief said.
