BEYOND BERGEN: A Jersey City man had an open bottle of Jack Daniels in his car when it crossed the double yellow lines in the Holland Tunnel and hits the curb at least twice, authorities said.
Port Authority Police Officer Rhett Peppi was behind the black 2007 Toyota Camry headed into New Jersey at 3:30 a.m., the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.
Peppi “activated his emergency lights and, using his public address system, instructed the driver to pull over upon exiting the tunnel,” Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Devaansh Attrey, kept going before finally stopping in a left traffic lane at 14th and Erie streets, he said.
Attrey smelled of alcohol and had gazed eyes, Pentangelo said. On the front floor, the officer found an open, half-empty 375 ML bottle of bourbon, he said.
After failing a sobriety test, Attrey registered a .13 on a breath test, Pentangelo said.
His car was impounded and he was charged with DWI, reckless driving, having an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle and failing to change the address on his driver’s license.
