YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: An oncologist from Saddle River was arrested and charged with writing illegal prescriptions for Oxycodone, amphetamines and other drugs, filling them at a Rochelle Park pharmacy and then either distributing them to customers or keeping them for herself.
Mary Ann Benigno was free on $50,000 bail after waiving a first appearance this afternoon in Superior Court in Hackensack.
Beginning in January and continuing until her arrest yesterday, Benigno, 52, “improperly wrote and filled numerous prescriptions for … Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Amphetamine Salts, and Methylphenidate, in the names of several different patients,” Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.
Benigno “then presented these prescriptions to be filled at Gallo’s Pharmacy located on Passaic Avenue in Rochelle Park,” near her office, the prosecutor said.
She then “turned over some of the medications … to people whose names appeared on the prescriptions and kept some of the medications for her personal use.”
Benigno, who previously kept offices in Ridgewood and Union City, was arrested and charged with drug possession and distribution following a five-month investigation that is continuing, Molinelli said.
Detectives are reviewing medical records and patient files of everyone who filled prescriptions for controlled substances written by Benigno this year, he said.
