Officers responding to a Gloria Drive resident’s 3 a.m. call that his SUV was being stolen from his driveway found the vehicle and a Toyota Camry on Gloria Drive, Police Chief George Scherb told Daily Voice.
Officer Dan Rosendahl stopped the Camry – with three occupants inside -- on Wilton Drive.
However, the stolen SUV’s driver “accelerated and drove directly at Police Officer Vincent Rizzo, causing him to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision,” Scherb said.
The SUV then turned onto northbound East Crescent Avenue before heading south on Route 17, he said.
Paramus police, hearing the alert, tried stopping the vehicle.
The driver eventually crashed and was arrested at the scene and brought to Paramus headquarters, Scherb said.
Identified as 20-year-old Shaquan Snipes of Newark, he was charged there with several offenses and turned over to Allendale police, the chief said.
Allendale police charged Snipes with theft of a motor vehicle and eluding so as to cause injury.
In the Camry, police found items that had been reported stolen elsewhere, Scherb noted.
Samantha Hess, a barista, and Jianna Scomparin, a restaurant hostess, both 19 and from North Arlington, were charged with conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property.
So was Edgar Carranza, 20, also from North Arlington.
Snipes and Carranza were ordered held in the Bergen County Jail pending bail hearings. The others were released pending court dates.
The Toyota was impounded pending further investigation, Scherb said.
