Tyrone “Tizzy” Stephens, 21, of Rosemont Place, was carrying a shotgun as he and four accomplices carrying handguns entered a Layfayette Place apartment building just before 11:30 p.m. June 2, the prosecutor said.
The crew went directly to a second-floor apartment and knocked on the door, he said.
They tried to force their way in when someone answered, but the victims “were able to prevent the door from being fully opened and wrested the shotgun away,” Grewal said.
One of the would-be robbers fired three rounds from a handgun into the apartment, but no one was struck, he said.
They then fled, leaving the shotgun behind.
Stephens was wanted for attempted murder, armed burglary and child endangerment when he was arrested without incident Thursday in Bogota, Grewal said.
He remained held in the Bergen County Jail on Friday, along with Corey McKay, 20, who was arrested by Englewood police on June 12.
That arrest wasn’t disclosed as authorities continued their investigation, which Grewal said remained ongoing.
Anyone with information that could help authorities catch the remaining three bandits is asked to contact the Englewood CrimeStoppers Tips Line at 844-466-6789 or the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 201-226-5532.
