MIDLAND PARK, N.J. -- Thomas James Smith, of Midland Park, died Tuesday Aug. 9. He was 85.
He was born in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1931.
Although sailing, boating and scuba diving were his primary hobbies, Smith had a private pilot’s license that his soon-to-be wife, Terry, learned about on their first flight.
He is survived by his wife, Therese M. Smith (nee Trunk); daughters Diane Smith Woodruff and son-in-law Tom Woodruff of Norwalk Conn., Deborah Smith and her husband Dori Amarillio of Los Angeles, Suzanne Ferleger and son-in-law Daniel Ferleger of Los Angeles and Melissa Simonet and husband Xavier Simonet of Paris, France; son, Thomas J. Smith and wife Bonnie of Ridgewood and their sons Owen and Garrett; and grandchildren, Zachary and Adam Ferleger and Benjamin and Dalia Amarillio.
Visiting hours will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. A Catholic prayer service will follow with burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, N.Y.
