Frank T. McKenna Jr., 86, Former Councilman, Waldwick Mayor

WALDWICK, N.J. -- Former Waldwick Mayor Frank T. McKenna Jr., of Waldwick, died Saturday, Jan. 2.

He was 86.

McKenna was born in City Island, N.Y., and lived in Waldwick for more than 61 years, raising his family.

He served in many public offices, including the Waldwick Board of Education, Waldwick Planning Board and Waldwick Zoning Board.

McKenna was elected as a councilman several times, serving from 1976-82 and 1999 to 2004.

He was elected mayor in 1984, serving until 1987.

McKenna also was a member of the Bergen County Open Space Advisory Board from 2003-07, serving as vice chairman in 2006-07.

Throughout his political career, he volunteered for the Waldwick Jaycees, served as a Little League coach and, for 17 years, delivered meals for Bergen County Meals on Wheels.

McKenna also belonged to the Lion’s Club of Waldwick and the Knights of Columbus.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1946-49 and 1950-51, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Throughout his life, McKenna learned about all things Irish.

He is survived by his children, Kathleen Walton (Les), of Silverthorn, Colo., Frank T. McKenna III, of Mahwah, Marianne Bausinger (Mark), of West Chester, Pa., and Jeanne Macko (Christopher), of Ramsey; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; his sister, Rita Lynch, of City Island, N.Y.; and brothers, Robert McKenna, of Tappan, N.Y., and Thomas McKenna, of Pine Hurst, N.C.

McKenna was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Mary G. (Fluhr) on Sept. 3, 1995.

The family will receive friends from 2-4  and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home , 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff.

A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Luke’s RC Church, 340 Franklin Turnpike, Ho Ho Kus., followed by interment at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes.
