Former Waldwick First Responder Dies

WALDWICK, N.J.– Jay Stafford, a 56-year member of the Waldwick Fire Department, died Monday, the department announced. He was 83.

Stafford, a U.S. Marine, is a Korean War veteran and 26-year member of the Waldwick Police Department.

Visitation was held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home (109 Darlington Ave.) in Ramsey.

The funeral mass will take place at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Ho-Ho-Kus on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

After retiring from the force in 1988, Stafford worked as a Senior Insurance Fraud Investigator for the New Jersey Division of Insurance Fraud and for USF&G Insurance Company in Baltimore, MD.

He was a past president of PBA Local 79, a member of the Allendale/Waldwick PBA Local 217, and past commander of Waldwick's VFW Post 1049. 

Stafford was also the past president of the Society of Investigators of Greater Newark, a member of Bergen County Local #2 Retired Police and Fire Officers and member of Honor Legion Police Departments, State of New Jersey. 

He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years Jolna Stafford, and survived by his family: Scott Stafford, Jody Stafford and Jeffrey (children) and his wife Bridget Stafford; grandchildren Erin Levine and husband Steve; Kyle Stafford and Dennis Stafford; and great grandchildren Evan Carter Levine and Keegan Reece Levine.
