Elmer Hymen, 90, Of Midland Park

MIDLAND PARK, N.J. -- Elmer Hymen, 90, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 30.

Born and raised in Midland Park he remained a lifelong resident.

Hymen served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a longtime member of the Midland Park United Methodist Church and co-founder and 40-year member of the Hudson Valley Hornets in Modena, N.Y.

In 1958, he obtained his pilot’s license, built two experimental aircraft and enjoyed flying with his family and friends. He was an amateur painter, and took up golf at 85.

In 1988, he retired from United Sheet Metal Union Local in Hackensack, where he was employed as a sheet metal mechanic.

He is survived by his children, William E. Hymen and his wife Renee of Ramsey and Janet Paul of Jupiter, Fla.; his granddaughter, Sharon-Leigh Ricker; and a great-grandson, Nathaniel Noack.

He was predeceased by his wife Mathilda, and his three older brothers.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus.
