SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- If there is public support for the idea, the Saddle River mayor and council may pass a new ordinance allowing bow hunting of deer to help control the growing population of the animals in town, NorthJersey.com reported.

On Thursday, the Wildlife Management Committee will have a meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal building with representation from the state Department of Environmental Protection Fish and Wildlife division to outline the deer problem and methods that can be used to keep deer in check, according to NorthJersey.com.

Estimates by the borough’s animal control officer, Carol Tyler, are there may be as many as 300 deer that make Saddle River their home, the story said. That number could triple in the next three years because the deer are reproducing at a rapid rate, NorthJersey.com said.

Bergen, Atlantic and Camden are the only counties in New Jersey without hunting programs, NorthJersey.com reported.
