John Barone, who grew up North Arlington, said his life experiences -- both good and bad--  are what led him on the path to becoming a lawyer.

"From an early age, I knew that helping people was my life's calling, and while all three careers are vastly different, they all have the same aspect of helping people when they are at their worst," he said.

The true catalyst for becoming a lawyer, however, occurred in 2008 after a lay off -- and feeling angry with himself for not having finished school. So, when the Jersey City Police Department hired him as a police officer later that year, he promised himself he'd finish college and become a lawyer.

His law practice, which opened July 1, specializes in family law (including divorce, child custody, adoption etc.), municipal court matters, residential real estate closings, and wills.

Having worked for more than 20 years as a first responder, he said, helped prepare him for his new role.

"I've seen and heard so much that nothing surprises me," he said. "I'm always expecting the unexpected. More importantly, I'm prepared to adapt to actively evolving situations and I have the critical thinking skills to make good decisions under pressure.

"Life experience is something that a text book can't replace, and as such, I bring a unique perspective to the legal profession."
