USR Cares was featured on an episode of The Doctors on Tuesday.

The group was inspired to form to help an Upper Saddle River family going through a double tragedy.

Two boys, Evan and Tyler, lost their father to cardiac arrest, and days later, their mother was re-diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She died just 10 months later.

“When she was re-diagnosed I knew that this family was going into a crisis,” the group’s founder, Leah Halpern said on the show.

Neighbors rallied together to drive her to the doctor, deliver meals to the family, provide tutoring for the boys, and even plow their driveway.

“I saw how many people wanted to help in the community,” Halpern said. “We go out and we try to tell everybody exactly what the family needs.”

USR Cares recently raised $30,000 at an Octoberfest event, so they can help even more families who face crisis.

When asked how other communities can start similar groups, Halpern said: “Find the doers of the community. You need lots of people that have really good expertise.”
