NORTH HALEDON, N.J. -- We all do it. Maybe it's the extra Christmas cookie, or the 'one more movie' we watch on the couch, or 'my last piece' of fruitcake. For better or for worse, from mid-November until the New Year people are constantly assaulted with a barrage of seasonal eats and treats.
"Caloric consumption is going to be through the roof from mid-November through January 1st," says Sean Kehoe, of Transformations by Sean Michael. According to research from the Calorie Control Council, the average American may consume more than 4,500 calories and a whopping 229 grams of fat from snacking and eating a traditional holiday dinner with turkey and all the trimmings.
While eating till we burst and retiring to the couch is a tempting option this time of year, Kehoe cautions against excess consumption and minimal activity.
"By no means would I advocating sewing your mouth shut," jokes Kehoe. "Just don’t go crazy on the “see-food” diet. Many of us, including myself at times do not like the dreaded “M” word: moderation." However, the key to surviving the holidays is doing just that, he says.
Instead of indulging in high fat and sugar foods, there are healthier option s that provide all the flavor with none of the drawbacks. The holiday season also is the perfect time for families to get together and stay fit; a post-dinner walk not only burns calories and gets the heart-rate pumping, but can be a great way to catch up and spend time together.
By simply using discipline and control coupled with healthier alternatives this Christmas season to it's much easier will keep the upper hand on the scale and not let the party crash us instead. This way, when the confetti falls on January first, those pants will fit as well as they did in October.
