Thousands To Run For Late Upper Saddle River Coach

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- More than 2,500 runners are expected to turn out for the 18th annual Thanksgiving Day Upper Saddle River 5K.

The Nov. 24 race honors late Upper Saddle River coach Dick Meighan, who coached hundreds in a variety of sports.

Memories of his devotion to family and community spirit live on in the race.

The race starts at 9 a.m.at Cavallini Middle School.

The fee is $30 in advance, $35 on race day.

Pre-registered racers can pick up their shirts, hats, race numbers and timing chips the night before, Nov. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the middle school.

Organizers are collecting used sports equipment for "Let’s Play it Forward."

Accepted items include: Footballs, kick balls, soccer balls, volleyballs and basketballs, all baseball, soccer, softball, hockey, tennis and lacrosse equipment, pinneys, orange cones and discs, roller blades, golf bags, full set of irons, woods, individual irons, wedges, putters and golf balls, shin guards, ski goggles and gloves, uniforms in sets of 12 or more and gently used sneakers.

Items not accepted: football gear, golf shoes, wrestling and swimming gear, apparel, skateboards, skis and ski boots.

Monetary donations should be made out to the Borough of USR and sent to Upper Saddle River 5k Run, PO Box 569, Saddle River, NJ 07458.
