SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and the Hughes and Zabransky families present the 5th annual Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run, on Saturday, April 23.
The run is to honor Hughes, who succumbed to cervical cancer in 2011 at the age of 46. Many of the race organizers met her at Saddle River's Wandell Elementary School, where she volunteered and was involved in many committees. One of her passions was running. The course includes some of the same streets she ran on, and also parts of Upper Saddle River, where she grew up.
The course is USATF-certified and sanctioned. It begins and ends at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, where the post-race activities will also be: an awards ceremony with refreshments, children's activities and live music. The cash prize for top overall male and female finishers is $100. There will be medals for the top three overall; top three finishers in each age group, male and female; first male and female Saddle River resident; and chocolate medals for children.
The organization's goal for the year is to raise $100,000 to fund a year of study for a deserving medical student at the new Hackensack University Medical Center and Seton Hall University School of Medicine, to ensure Hughes' legacy will continue to impact the lives of patients and their families in the years to come.
Contributions will also continue to fund a riding program at Pony Power Therapies, in Mahwah, for pediatric patients from the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at HackensackUMC.
