Funeral For Midland Park Math Teacher Scheduled In Fair Lawn

MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — A funeral service for Midland Park High School math teacher Leon Varjian, formerly of Wood-Ridge, will be at St. Leon Armenian Church in Fair Lawn, on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The 10 a.m. service will be followed by interment in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus. 

Visiting hours were scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Costa Memorial Home and Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights.

A 27-year district veteran, Varjian died suddenly on Sept. 29.He was known both as a prankster in his younger days and as a dedicated humanitarian who worked with students to raise money for various non-profit groups, including area food pantries (SEE: Midland Park Math Teacher Leaves Legacy Of Humor, Humanitarianism).

Varjian provided scorecards during school baseball and softball games, collected soup for Thanksgiving food drives, organized toy and coat drives and was a driving force in raising money for a bench in memory of another math teacher, Matt Sayles, who was 26 when he died from cancer in 2011.
