Waldwick School Of Rock Director: This Is Band

WALDWICK, N.J. — School of Rock on Franklin Turnpike has no ties to Jack Black's 2003 musical comedy about students who start a band with their substitute teacher. But its philosophy isn't far off.

“Traditional music lessons were in your room," said the school's director, STATiC.

"You had your teacher come to your house and your primary audience was your family constantly telling you you’re great.

"You finally want to be in a band when you're 18, you have a giant ego and no way to musically socialize with another musician.

"We cut all that out," the director said. "This is band."

Because being in a band isn't only about getting famous and making money, STATiC — the lead guitarist of "Ours" — is incorporating charity work into the curriculum.

Waldwick and Saddle Brook Schools of Rock are combining forces on Wednesday evening at Mexicali Live in Teaneck for the Holiday Throw-Down. All guests are encouraged to bring activity gift cards — movie theaters, mini-golf, etc. — that will be donated to children in local foster homes.

"I love playing in arenas, but you still have to do the right thing every day," said STATiC, who holds regular fundraisers and programs for Children's Aide and Family Services (SEE: Waldwick School Of Rock Hosts Halloween Costume Drive).

The most rewarding part about working with young musicians at School of Rock is seeing how music fosters friendships, STATiC said.

"The part I really caught on to is how these kids really learn to get along," he said. "It's a team sport for people who can't play sports or don't want to play sports.

"People who don't fit into that mentality come here and it helps them connect. I enjoy being the circus ring leader of sorts to keep kids who were like me inspired."
