From Veterans To Youths, OritaniBank Foundation Invests In Area's Future

NEW JERSEY -- For Township of Washington-based Oritani Bank, being a local bank isn’t just about helping customers meet their financial goals. It’s about working to make the four counties it operates in, the best they can be. Thanks to the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation, not-for- profit groups across North Jersey are receiving a boost.

Oritani Bank originally began as a mutual savings and loan association in 1911. Nearly 100 years later in 2010, the now publicly owned bank donated $10 million of Oritani stock to the newly formed OritaniBank Charitable Foundation. "The $10 million gift to the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation was our way of giving back to our community which had originally formed Oritani over 100 years before," said Kevin J. Lynch, president of the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation.

The foundation was created to support four main community areas: education, health and human services, youth programs and affordable housing. It’s under these umbrellas that Oritani Bank goes beyond the standard obligations of a community bank.

For example, the foundation recently awarded a $20,000 grant to Youth Consultation Services, an organization which provides human services to at-risk and special needs youths and young adults across the state. Oritani Bank also awarded Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon a grant of $100,000 to aid the recovery of wounded veterans and improve the morale of troops in active war zones and their families at home. The list of charitable contributions goes on, from helping home health aides to providing free medical care; Oritani Bank is making a difference across town and across the world.

“It is one of the most rewarding parts of my job to see the great works and uses that the community oriented charitable organizations have performed with the help of donations from the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation," said Lynch. "We feel that we are upholding a trust of service to the community that was the motivation of the founders of the Oritani Bank in 1911.”

From providing exercise equipment to deployed Special Forces to helping purchase a car for mobile social workers, Oritani Bank and its charitable foundation’s biggest accomplishments are outside of the balance sheet.
